Mary Eliot Stone

Wake Forest University, Class of 2021

Mary Eliot Stone is a senior at Wake Forest University with a major in Sociology and double minor in global trade and commerce studies as well as Middle East and South Asia studies. Her primary interests are international policy, education, and gender equality and more specifically the intersection of the three. She spent the summer of 2018 living in Besisahar, Nepal living with a Dalit woman doing ethnographic research on women’s empowerment within the lowest “untouchable” caste in Nepal. This research investigated female empowerment within the Dalit caste looking specifically at the intersection of educational institutions and women’s role in decision making in the home. Mary Eliot was named the 2019 Young Achiever in “Eastside Living Magazine” for her work in Nepal. Upon graduation in May, Mary Eliot hopes to join the Peace Corps in order to work internationally in the education sector while additionally helping empower women and girls.
